iPhone Keyboard Tip for Power Users

One of the best things about the iPhone keyboard, especially for those of us with fat fingers, is its ability to figure out what you meant to type and autocorrect on the fly.  A side effect of this autocorrect feature is that it adds apostrophes into contractions (e.g. ive becomes I’ve, youre becomes you’re, etc.).

Unfortunately, there are contractions that, without their apostrophes, are also common words.  For example, well, shell, and were override we’ll, she’ll, and we’re.  I recently discovered a way around this problem:

When intending a contraction, enter the word’s last character twice.

Thusly, welll turns into we’ll and weree becomes we’re.  I haven’t yet tested this with every possible contraction, but it’s worked for every one I’ve tried so far.  And again, it’s only necessary for those contractions which form other common English words sans apostrophe.

Enjoy the less frequent entry of apostrophes!
